Transportation
The Chariton Community School District provides transportation to students with city bus stops in Chariton and surrounding communities.
City bus stops include:
- Columbus Elementary
- Van Allen Elementary
- Chariton Middle School
- Chariton High School
- former McKinley Advertising building
- former Hy-Vee Corporate Office building
Students residing within the city limits of Chariton can load at any of these bus stops. We also have bus stops in the cities of Williamson, Lucas, and Russell.

Policies and Expectations
While riding District-provided transportation, students are expected to follow the policies that have been established by the Board of Education. These policies outline the student conduct regulations expected of all students. Additionally, the Board has authorized the use of video cameras on district transportation to assist in management:

Do you want to become a bus driver? Check out these key documents and our process outline below:
Becoming a Bus Driver
- Fill out an application.
- Interview.
- Pass all written CDL tests.
- Complete background check paperwork.
- Schedule drive test.
- Visit the bus garage to familiarize yourself with the school buses.
- After successful drive test completion, schedule a DOT physical with the clinic. The school district pays for this.
- With completed physical paperwork, you can be entered into the Iowa Department of Education database and granted a temporary permit to drive a school bus for six months.
- Complete the 14-hour, online bus driver training.
- Once the online training is completed, you will be scheduled for a 3-hour, face-to-face training, held in an evening in Ottumwa at Indian Hills Community College.
When all of the above steps have been completed, you will then only be required to attend an annual 3-hour refresher class, held in Chariton.
